Questions about steelworks
Practical answers to help you plan the next step.
Do I need a structural engineer for a knock-through?
Where a proposed alteration affects the structure, the necessary assessment and design must come from an appropriately qualified professional. That includes establishing what support is required and how it connects to the building. Cameron coordinates the construction from the agreed information. A site visit is a starting point for defining the project, not a substitute for the required structural design.
Do you manufacture the steelwork yourselves?
This service concerns steelwork within the building projects Cameron manages. It does not assume that Suffolk Coastal Construction operates a fabrication workshop. The project-specific design and specialist supply arrangements are agreed as part of the scope. Cameron coordinates how that stage fits with the masonry, installation and finishes, so the work is planned as part of the complete build.
Can steelwork be hidden in the finished room?
The finished appearance depends on the structural design, available space and required protection and finishes. Some designs allow the structure to sit within the ceiling or wall line; others leave a visible change in level. Discuss your preferred appearance with the designer before details are finalised. Cameron can then coordinate the agreed construction and finishing work around that solution.
Can structural steel be part of my extension?
Yes, where the extension design specifies it and it forms part of the agreed scope. Steelwork may be required around a new connection to the house or a large opening. Cameron coordinates this with the supporting construction and the trades that follow. Your appointed professional provides the design, and the required application and inspection responsibilities are agreed before work begins.
Who coordinates the trades on site?
Cameron is your project manager and point of contact. He coordinates the relevant trades for this stage of the work and the building stages around it. You can speak to him by phone, email or WhatsApp. If a decision or delay affects progress, he explains the position and the next step, and checks the agreed work through to handover.
How is the work quoted?
Book a site visit and tell us about the larger project and the work you need. Send the property postcode and any available drawings. Cameron will confirm the visit, review the site and discuss the work and finish to include. Your quote relates to that agreed scope; any variations in work, cost or timing are discussed before proceeding.
What should we agree before this work starts?
The size, arrangement and connections of structural steel need project-specific design. Cameron works from that information and coordinates the relevant specialists as part of the agreed building scope. Steelwork can also affect floor levels, ceiling lines and how an opening is finished. Discuss the appearance you want with your designer and Cameron before the structural details are finalised.
