Questions about plastering

Practical answers to help you plan the next step.

What is the difference between plastering and skimming?

Plastering is the wider term for preparing and finishing walls or ceilings. Skimming refers to a thin finishing coat over a suitable background. The right approach depends on the existing surface and the construction specified for your project. Cameron coordinates the plasterers with that preparation, so the quote describes the work required rather than assuming every wall needs the same treatment.

Can existing walls be skimmed during a renovation?

Potentially, but their condition needs to be assessed first. Loose material, damage or an unsuitable background can change the preparation needed before a new finish is applied. Cameron reviews the refurbishment scope and coordinates the relevant trade advice. If more work is required than originally agreed, he explains the issue and discusses the variation before it goes ahead.

Can you finish my extension at plaster stage?

Yes. A plaster-finish handover is one of the options Cameron offers for suitable building projects. Agree the precise scope before the quote is prepared, including what is included around doors, ceilings and other fittings. The handover should explain what remains to be done, so you can arrange decoration and any other later stages without relying on assumptions.

When can I decorate after plastering?

The surface needs to be ready for the finish being applied. Drying depends on the material and conditions, so there is no single timetable that suits every room. Follow the plaster and paint manufacturers’ guidance and the advice given for the work. Cameron discusses the handover with you so that decoration can be planned around the actual condition of the surfaces.

Who coordinates the trades on site?

Cameron is your project manager and point of contact. He coordinates the relevant trades for this stage of the work and the building stages around it. You can speak to him by phone, email or WhatsApp. If a decision or delay affects progress, he explains the position and the next step, and checks the agreed work through to handover.

How is the work quoted?

Book a site visit and tell us about the larger project and the work you need. Send the property postcode and any available drawings. Cameron will confirm the visit, review the site and discuss the work and finish to include. Your quote relates to that agreed scope; any variations in work, cost or timing are discussed before proceeding.

What should we agree before this work starts?

A room ready for plastering is not automatically ready for decoration straight afterwards. The materials, conditions and subsequent finishes need to be taken into account when the programme is agreed. If you want to organise painting yourself, make that part of the original brief. Cameron records the intended handover condition and the work left for you, so the next stage starts with clear expectations.
